Algae Prevention and Inhibitor for Ponds and Lakes

FAQ

Below are some frequently asked questions and answers:

Q. Is the product safe?
A. Yes. The dosage recommended is very low and has no effect on fish, any visiting wildlife or domestic animals. A product Health & Safety Data Sheet is at the end of this document.

Q. Does the product stain?
A. In its concentrated form, Pond Blue WILL stain hands and clothing, so it is always recommended that gloves should be worn when handling the products. At a dilution rate of 1:5,750,000 no staining will occur.

Q. Is it safe to swim in water treated with Pond Blue
A. Yes. Pond Blue is a European Food Approved Colour (E133)

Q. Can we use more than the recommended dose?
A. Yes. Pond Blue can be overdosed by a factor of over 6000, but while this would be good for our sales, it would not serve any practical purpose. Using 2, 3 or 4 times the normal dose is normal practice for people who like to enhance the colour of their Ponds.

Q. The photograph in The Angling Times made the water look very Blue, why was that?
A. The photograph was taken as the pond was being dosed, the concentrated dye being applied immediately behind a water pump. When the dye has fully mixed with all of the water in the pond, it is almost unnoticeable.

Q. Will Pond Blue work in all ponds?
A. Almost. The depth of the ponds must be a minimum of 24 inches for the Blue to serve its proper purpose (there is no maximum depth requirement). It is possible for the product to work in shallower waters, for example, a pond depth of 12 inches would require twice the normal dose.

Q. How long will it last?
A. There is no definitive answer to this question as strong sunlight and rainfall both have an effect on the dye. The Sun will fade the dye and rainfall will dilute it, but tests carried out in the UK show that 3 months is easily achievable before any topping up is required. When a top up is required, the pond will NOT require a full dose.

Q. How will we know when, and how much to use for topping up?
A. Without the use of sophisticated measuring equipment, this has to be left to your judgement using the naked eye. We suggest that before any Blue is added to the Pond, a sample should be taken (in a clear container). After the Dye has been added and allowed to completely mix with all of the pond water, another sample should be taken. Both of these samples should be labelled and stored in a cool DARK place. About once per month, a fresh sample should be taken and compared to the originals, paying attention to the depth of Blue in the original and the latest samples. If the latest sample looks to be about half the strength, top up the pond with half the original dose.

Q. How long does it take for Pond Blue to mix into a pond?
A. This depends on a number of factors. The size of the pond - with a very big pond, it may be difficult to reach the middle (without using a boat). The "stillness" of the water - the more movement of the water, the quicker the dye will mix. If re-circulating pumps are used the mixing will take less time. The simple movement of fish helps to distribute the DyoFix.

Q. Will the DyoFix Pond Blue damage water pumps?
A. No. The dye is completely soluble and will pass through pumps and filters very easily.

Q. Can DyoFix Blue be used with other products?
A. DyoFix Pond Blue can be used with other chemicals provided that they are not Chlorine based. Chlorine will attack the dye by bleaching it and rendering it useless.

Q. How much product will I need?
A. This depends on how much water is in the pond. You will need to calculate the number of Litres of Pond water. To do this, you will need to establish the length, width and depth of the pond in Metres. Multiply the dimensions and convert the total into Litres by multiplying by 1000.
e.g. 98M (Length) x 43M (Width) x 2M (Depth) = 8428 x 1000 = 8,428,000 Litres
1 Kilo of DyoFix Pond Blue Liquid Concentrate will treat 5,750,000 litres of Pond water, so you would need to use about 1.5 Kgs.

Q. What do I do with unused DyoFix?
A. Keep it in a cool, dry place with the cap firmly in place and use it for "topping up" later in the season. Stored in this way, DyoFix has a long shelf life.
